La Baleine near Gavray, Manche – Superb Countryside, Close to Beaches and Major Normandy Places Of Interest.
2024 was another very busy year with only one week free between March and mid October. We are taking bookings for 2025 and have actually reduced the rental to make it a little easier for those looking for maybe two weeks or more. The cost per week is now £400 fully inclusive. So please book early to avoid disappointment.
We have a lot of guests returning which is so nice for us as we have made good friends over the years.
La Cachette is a detached stone cottage, set in its own private garden with panoramic views of the beautiful Sienne river valley. Located about 300 metres along a country lane which leads directly to a footpath beside the river, the gite is in the middle of a conservation area renowned for its stunning scenery.
A wonderful riverside walk meanders its way to Gavray, and many other superb walks are accessible direct from the house. Fishing is available in the river within 200 yards of the gite and the area is teeming with wildlife such as deer, badgers, hare, buzzards, owls, and even the occasional otter.
Le Krill restaurant is 5 minutes from the gite. This has been totally refurbished by new owners and is very popular with locals. Best to book in advance for Friday or Saturday.
The local market town of Gavray, which is just 5 minutes by car, has a supermarket as well as a choice of restaurants, banks, shops etc. A very popular market is held in the town every Saturday morning. The pristine sandy beaches of the west coast are a mere 20 minutes drive away.
The port of Granville is wonderful for shopping, and eating out in one of the fish restaurants surrounding the quayside. Or maybe catching a ferry to one of the Channel Islands. The famous ‘copper’ town of Villedieu les Poeles is 20 minutes away and has lots of museums to visit. One place is the Bell Foundry where they recently made one for the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. There is a very popular market here every Tuesday. Also 20 minutes away is the pretty town of Coutances with its impressive Cathedral and wonderful gardens to walk around opposite the main square. Then of course there is Mont St Michel, one of the top places to visit in the whole of France, or Bayeux famous for its Tapestry and fabulous Cathedral.
Bayeux also has the British War Cemetery which is the largest Second World War cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers in France, The cemetery contains 4,648 burials, mostly from the Invasion of Normandy. The D-D beaches are all within easy reach.
We have been open for 20 years so have a lot of experience running our holiday gite. We pride ourselves on offering a home from home, and always do our utmost to make sure our guests enjoy their holiday.
For 2025 we have painted the whole gite. There are new bedroom curtains, new bedding and new lounge furniture.
